🚨

Heating emergency in winter? If the temperature in your apartment drops below 15°C and you can't solve the problem within 30 minutes, call emergency service: +421 908 959 740 (24/7 nonstop)

Step 1: Stay Calm and Check the Basics

The first thing you need to do when you discover that the heating isn't working is not to panic. Most malfunctions have a simple solution that you can handle yourself in a few minutes. Before calling a service, check these basic things: If the problem isn't resolved after the basic check, the next step is heating work in Bratislava.

  • Boiler is on - Check if the boiler is not turned off at the main switch or via the control panel
  • Electrical power - Check the circuit breaker in the distribution box to see if it hasn't tripped
  • System pressure - The boiler's manometer should show pressure between 1-2 bar (green zone)
  • Gas valve - If you have a gas boiler, make sure the gas supply is open
  • Thermostat set correctly - Check if the desired temperature is higher than the current one
💡

Tip: Write down the basic data from your boiler BEFORE winter (normal pressure, temperature, mode). It will make diagnostics easier in case of a malfunction.

Step 2: Check the Boiler Display - Error Messages

Modern boilers have error codes on the display that precisely show where the problem is. Most common error messages and their solutions:

Error codeWhat it meansSolution
E01 / F28Boiler won't igniteCheck gas supply, call service
E10 / F22Low water pressureAdd water via filling valve to 1.5 bar
E25 / F75Pump problemTry restarting the boiler, if it doesn't help - service
E35Sensor errorDisconnect boiler for 5 min, if problem persists - service
F20OverheatingLet it cool down, check bleeding
⚠️

Warning: If you see an error related to gas (F28, F29), DO NOT TRY to fix it yourself. This is a safety issue - call a professional immediately.

Step 3: Add Water Pressure (if too low)

The most common cause of non-functional heating is low water pressure in the system. The ideal pressure is 1.2-1.5 bar with a cold system. How to add water:

  1. Turn off the boiler - Safety first
  2. Find the filling valve - Usually a small black hose under the boiler with a turn valve
  3. Slowly open the valve - Open carefully, you'll hear the sound of flowing water
  4. Watch the manometer - When pressure reaches 1.5 bar, close the valve
  5. Close the valve and check - Make sure the valve is completely closed (not leaking)
  6. Turn on the boiler - The boiler should start automatically
🚨

Warning: Don't add water above 2 bar! Too high pressure can damage the system. If pressure drops quickly after filling (within 24 hours), you have a leak somewhere - call service.

Step 4: Bleed the Radiators

If the boiler is running but radiators are cold or only partially warm, the problem is probably air in the system. Bleeding radiators is a simple task:

  • Prepare a container and cloth - Under the bleed valve
  • Find the bleed valve - Small valve on the side of the radiator (top)
  • Open the valve with a special key - Or screwdriver (depending on type)
  • Wait until it stops hissing - Hissing = air escaping (that's good)
  • When water starts dripping - Immediately close the valve
  • Repeat on all radiators - Start from the lowest floor
ℹ️

After bleeding the radiators, check the pressure in the boiler - it has probably dropped. Add it back to 1.5 bar.

Step 5: Restart the Boiler

If none of the above helped, try a hard reset of the boiler. It often solves temporary software errors:

  1. Turn off the boiler at the main switch or via the control panel
  2. Disconnect the boiler from the electrical network - Turn off the breaker in the distribution box
  3. Wait 5 minutes - Let the electronics completely discharge
  4. Reconnect the electricity - Turn on the breaker
  5. Turn on the boiler - Wait until it starts up (approx. 1-2 min)
  6. Check the display - To see if it's showing an error

When to Call Emergency Service?

Some problems CANNOT be solved by yourself and require immediate intervention by a professional. Call emergency service if:

  • You smell gas - Immediately close the gas supply and call the emergency line
  • Water pressure drops quickly (water leak somewhere in the system)
  • Boiler makes unusual sounds - Humming, banging, cracking
  • Water is leaking from the boiler - Risk of flooding
  • Critical error is displayed (F28, F29, E35, etc.)
  • None of the above solutions helped
  • Temperature in the apartment drops below 15°C - Risk of pipe freezing

Prevention: How to Prevent Heating Malfunctions

Most heating malfunctions can be prevented with regular maintenance and inspection. Here is a checklist for autumn (before the heating season):

  • Annual boiler service - A professional will check, clean and adjust the boiler
  • Check pressure - Should be between 1-2 bar
  • Bleed radiators - Before the heating season starts
  • Clean the boiler - Dust the inside and around the boiler
  • Check the chimney - Make sure it's not blocked (important for safety)
  • Test the boiler dry - Turn on the heating for a few hours, even if it's not cold outside yet
💡

Recommendation: Schedule boiler service for September-October, NOT when the frost starts. In winter, technicians are busy and waiting times can be long.

Conclusion: Don't Be Afraid to Call a Professional

Although you can solve many heating problems yourself, remember that a boiler is a complex device where every mistake can have serious consequences. If you're not sure, call a professional. The cost of an emergency call is always lower than the cost of a damaged boiler, frozen pipes or - in the worst case - health problems caused by improper gas repair.
