Imagine this: It is freezing outside, the thermometer shows -10°C, and your heating has just stopped working. According to statistics, as many as 60% of heating failures happen at the worst possible time - during frost. In this article, you will learn the most common causes of breakdowns and how to prevent them effectively. If failures keep repeating or the system stops during the season, it is not worth waiting, and it makes sense to arrange heating services in Bratislava.
7 most common causes of heating failure
Based on our 15 years of experience, we have identified these main causes:
1. Low water pressure in the system (35% of failures)
The most common problem! The gas boiler automatically shuts down the heating if the pressure falls below the minimum value.
Why the pressure drops:
- Micro-leaks - Small leaks at joints and valves
- Bleeding radiators - Every bleed = water loss
- Expansion vessel - Damaged membrane
- Seasonal changes - Water contracts when it cools
- Leaking heat exchanger - Water escapes into the drain
NORMAL PRESSURE: 1.0 - 2.0 bar (boiler cold), 1.5 - 2.5 bar (boiler running)
How to fix it:
- Check the pressure gauge on the boiler - does it show pressure?
- If the pressure is below 1.0 bar, add water
- Find the filling valve (usually under the boiler)
- Open the valve slowly and watch the gauge
- Stop at 1.5 bar
- Close the valve!
WARNING: If you have to top up water more often than once every 3 months, you have a leak somewhere! Call a technician.
2. Air in radiators (25% of failures)
Air in the system prevents water circulation and causes:
- 🥶 Cold radiators (cold at the top, warm at the bottom)
- 🔊 Noise and bubbling in the pipes
- ⚡ Frequent boiler safety trips
- 💰 Higher gas consumption (inefficient heating)
How to bleed a radiator:
- Prepare a cloth and a container
- Turn the heating to maximum
- Wait 15 minutes (the radiators warm up)
- Find the bleed valve (small square opening at the top of the radiator)
- Insert the key/screwdriver and slowly turn counterclockwise
- Do you hear hissing? That is air escaping - let it out
- When water starts dripping, CLOSE the valve immediately
- Wipe away the water
- Repeat for all radiators in the house
- Check the boiler pressure - top up water if needed
TIP: Bleed radiators at the start of the heating season (September/October) and once in the middle of winter (January).
3. Frozen pipes or condensate (15% of failures)
Typical for: Family houses, boiler rooms in unheated spaces, condensing boilers.
What freezes:
- Condensate drain hose - On condensing boilers
- Pipes in the basement/garage - Unheated spaces
- Flue shaft - Condensate from the chimney
- Cold water supply to the boiler
Prevention:
- ✅ Insulate pipes in unheated spaces
- ✅ Route the condensate drain hose through heated areas
- ✅ Use heating cable at critical points
- ✅ Add antifreeze to the condensate (special products)
- ✅ Maintain a minimum temperature of 5°C in the boiler room
NEVER defrost pipes with an open flame! Use warm air (hair dryer), warm cloths, or an electric heating cable.
4. Faulty circulation pump (10% of failures)
The circulation pump ensures water circulation in the system. If it does not work = no heating.
Symptoms of a faulty pump:
- 🔇 The pump is silent (a healthy pump hums slightly)
- 🥵 Boiler hot, radiators cold (water is not circulating)
- ⚡ The boiler keeps switching off (overheating)
- 🔊 Strange noises from the pump (squeaking, clicking)
Causes of the fault:
- Blocked rotor - Sediment, long shutdown
- Worn bearing - Older pumps (10+ years)
- Electrical fault - Burnt coil
- Air in the pump - Rotor blocked
First aid (try it yourself):
- Switch off the boiler from the electricity
- Wait 5 minutes
- Find the pump (usually next to the boiler, cylindrical shape)
- There is a small square opening on the front (under a plastic cap)
- Insert a screwdriver and gently turn it left and right
- Do you feel resistance? The rotor is blocked - keep turning
- Did the rotor free up? Turn the boiler back on
- Working? Problem solved (temporarily)
NOTICE: This is only a temporary solution! If the problem repeats, the pump must be replaced.
Pump replacement cost: 150-350 EUR (pump + labor)
5. Error code on the display (8% of failures)
Modern boilers display error codes. The most common are:
| Code | Meaning | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| E01 / F1 | Low water pressure | Top up water (chapter 1) |
| E02 / F2 | Overheating | Bleed radiators, check the pump |
| E03 / F3 | Pump problem | Unblock the rotor (chapter 4) |
| E10 / F10 | Pressure problem | Check the expansion vessel |
| E25 / F25 | Circulation problem | Bleed the system |
| E50 / F50 | Temperature sensor | Call a technician |
| E80 / F80 | Electrical fault | Call a technician |
TIP: Take a photo of the error code and send it to the technicians via WhatsApp - they may advise you over the phone!
6. Dirty filter / heat exchanger (5% of failures)
The filter catches impurities from the water. After years, it clogs up and blocks the flow.
Symptoms:
- Some radiators are cold, others are warm
- The boiler switches off and on frequently
- Weak hot water flow (combi boilers)
- Noise in the piping
Cleaning the filter:
- Switch off the boiler
- Find the filter (usually at the water inlet to the boiler, Y-shaped)
- Place a cloth and a bucket underneath
- Drain the filter (open the bleed valve)
- Unscrew the lower part of the filter
- Remove the mesh and clean it (water + brush)
- Check the seal and replace it if damaged
- Reassemble it
- Restore the pressure in the system
RECOMMENDATION: Clean the filter once a year (before the heating season).
7. Power / gas outage (2% of failures)
Seems trivial, but it is more common than you think:
- ⚡ Tripped breaker - The boiler has its own breaker in the electrical panel
- 🔌 Unplugged power cord - Accidentally during cleaning
- ⛽ Closed gas valve - After inspection or service
- 💳 Unpaid gas bill - Supply suspended
- 🔋 Dead thermostat battery - Wireless thermostats
Checklist:
- Is the boiler display lit? If not → check the electricity
- Is the boiler breaker switched on in the electrical panel?
- Is the plug connected?
- Is the gas valve open? (lever parallel to the pipe = OPEN)
- Is the thermostat working? Try changing the temperature
- Thermostat batteries? Replace them
Preventive maintenance - once a year can save your winter
80% of failures could be prevented with regular maintenance!
Recommended maintenance plan:
September (before the season):
- Boiler service (technician)
- Bleeding all radiators
- Filter cleaning
- Pressure check and water top-up
- Function test (turn on the heating for a few hours)
January (middle of the season):
- Pressure check
- Bleeding radiators (if needed)
- Condensate check (is it freezing?)
April (after the season):
- System condition check
- Water sample test (quality check)
- Planning repairs for summer (cheaper!)
INVESTMENT: Preventive service costs 80-120 EUR/year. An emergency callout in winter costs 150-300 EUR. It pays off!
When to call emergency service vs. wait for a technician?

TOP 5 owner mistakes that lead to failure
- Putting off service - "It works, why should I pay for servicing?" → A week later the boiler fails in freezing weather.
- Ignoring warning signs - Noise, bubbling sounds, fluctuating pressure → "It will pass" → It will not.
- DIY repairs - YouTube tutorials are great, but gas and heating are not a DIY topic.
- Cheap service from "someone you know" - Qualified technician vs. "expert in everything" → You know who wins.
- No backup heating option - When the boiler fails, you have nothing to heat with → Freezing all night.
Backup plan - what to do when the boiler fails at night
- Call emergency service immediately - Every hour of freezing makes the situation worse
- Close doors between rooms - Concentrate heat in one room
- Dress in layers - Thermal underwear, fleece, blanket
- Electric heaters - If you have them, use them (watch out for overloading the electrical network!)
- Hot water - Run hot water in the bathroom, steam will warm the space slightly
- Protect the pipes - Open cabinets under sinks so warm air can circulate around the pipes
- If it is not manageable - Go to relatives, friends, or a hotel
DANGER: NEVER burn coal/wood in an apartment without a proper chimney! Risk of CO (carbon monoxide) poisoning = deadly!
Conclusion
A heating failure in winter is a stressful situation, but 80% of problems are predictable and preventable. Key points:
- ✅ Preventive service in September is a duty, not a luxury
- ✅ Bleed radiators twice a year
- ✅ Check the pressure monthly (5 seconds of work)
- ✅ Insulate critical pipes before winter
